Autism/TEACCH

The incidents of autism and other related communication disorders have dramatically increased in recent years and it is now estimated that 1 of 126 births in Illinois is an autistic child. At Keshet, we have known of this emerging silent epidemic for many years - and we have been preparing for one of the most pronounced public health and educational emergencies ever to face our families, our schools, and our health system.

Keshet is the only public or private organization in the Midwest that provides training to teachers and school administrators in the most effective method of providing educational services for children with autism - structured teaching. (TEACCH).

Structured teaching is a specific instructional modality in service of children with autistic spectrum disorders. This modality, developed by clinicians at Division TEACCH (Treatment and Education of Autistic and related Communication handicapped Children), at the University of North Carolina, has been deemed highly efficacious for serving the growing population of children with autism throughout the United States.

For those parents all across the Midwest who every day meet the challenge of having a child with autism, Keshet's expertise in structured teaching has made a tremendous difference. The State of Illinois' Department of Human Services has recognized TEACCH as the premier method of educating children with autism.

The Leventhal/Keshet Autism Training and Demonstration Center

Leventhal working with Josh Keshet has become a national model for training special education professionals who work with individuals with autism and communication disorders.

A unique partnership between the University of Illinois and Keshet promotes the use of state-of-the-art educational techniques, which structure the teaching environment to maximize the student's potential.

By forming partnerships and alliances with those sharing our vision, the University of Illinois and Division TEACCH, University of North Carolina, the Leventhal Autism Center is able to extend training opportunities to other professionals and parents positively impacting the lives of thousands of children.

The Center is based at the Keshet Day School and has achieved national acclaim as a therapeutic educational center for children with developmental disabilities.

The Center has established a wide scope of professional and parent trainings and seminars relevant to autistic spectrum disorders including the TEACCH model of structured teaching and other topics relating to educating and raising children with communication disorders.

The Center was established in memory of Howard and Florence Leventhal, parents of Bennett Leventhal, M.D., renowned autism expert and longstanding Keshet advisor and program collaborator.
